Badenoch flip-flopping
Current Conservative Party Leader Kemi Badenoch said today said that she doesn’t see the need for independent regulation of football. She is “opposed to it personally”. West Ham United Supporters Trust (WHUST) aren’t sure what to make of this. We know Kemi was a member of a Cabinet which choose to introduce legislation precisely intended to create just such a regulator. And Kemi was a senior Minister when her Party made a commitment to legislate for independent regulation in their Election Manifesto.
Asked about her support for the recommendations in the Fan Led Review of Football, Kemi was commendably clear, “I can assure you that I support these reforms which I feel will set a new and better strategic direction for football, and I look forward to reading the proposals in further detail when the Government publishes its White Paper…”.
That White Paper, and subsequent Conservative Football Bill, were in large part the excellent work of the then Minister for Sport, Stuart Andrew. This must have impressed Kemi since on becoming leader, she promoted Stuart to Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Taking all these things into consideration we at WHUST are less clear today than we were yesterday about Conservative policy. We find Kemi’s flip-flopping confused and confusing.
